Full Description

A Bronze Age round barrow is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs to the west of Lumber Lane, Knowlton, centred approximately at SU 02120 10159. It is formed of two concentric ditches measuring approximately 11 m and 34 m in diameter. The barrow is probably associated with the extensive barrow cemetery known as the Knowlton Circles Barrow Group. This feature was recorded from EH Reconnaissance aerial photographs. <1>

A rapid examination of air photography suggests the presence of two further possible round barrow sites, of Prehistoric or Roman date, visible as ring ditch cropmarks at SU 0204 1033 and SU 0211 1014. <1>

The three round barrows described by authorities 1-3 have been mapped from aerial photographs by EH's Knowlton Circles Project. Their location and dimensions have been recorded more accurately, and photographic evidence allowed more detail to be identified. ... A second barrow (SU 0212 1015) is also defined by two ditches, with diameters of 34.5m and 17m. These barrows are associated with the extensive barrow cemetery known as the Knowlton Circles Barrow Group. <2>

A partial double ring ditch at Knowlton, Woodlands, is visible as a cropmark on a 1970s aerial photograph <3>.

The ring ditch measures 38.5m by 37m and comprises two concentric ditches, 4.8m and 1.8m wide and 7.5m apart. The feature appears to be slightly truncated on its northwest side by a historic field boundary present on the OS 1st Edition map.

The feature is one of a group of similar features at this location and is probably a Bronze Age barrow. The feature was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
