Prehistoric round barrows south west of the Knowlton Circles. <4>

The three round barrows described by authorities 1-3 have been mapped from aerial photographs by EH's Knowlton Circles Project. Their location and dimensions have been recorded more accurately, and photographic evidence allowed more detail to be identified. The largest barrow (SU 0202 1017) is 61m in diameter, with a smaller ring ditch at its centre 17.5m in diameter. A second barrow (SU 0212 1015) is also defined by two ditches, with diameters of 34.5m and 17m. The third barrow is defined by a single incomplete circular ditch 43.5m in diameter. These barrows are associated with the extensive barrow cemetery known as the Knowlton Circles Barrow Group. <5>

A double ring ditch at Knowlton, Woodlands, is visible as a cropmark on a 1977 aerial photograph <6>. It is also clearly visible on a 2014 aerial photograph <7>.

The ring ditch measures 65m across and comprises a 2.3m wide exterior ditch and a smaller 1.5m wide sub-circular ditch at the centre. The feature is one of a group of similar features at this location and is probably a Bronze Age barrow.

The feature was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
