Full Description

A rapid examination of air photography suggests the presence of possibly three ring ditches, visible as cropmarks in a field West of Knowlton: A - SU 01871007. <3>

SU 01731000; SU 01831009. Two round barrows, lying south west of the 'Knowlton Circles'. <4>

The three round barrows described by authority 1have been mapped by from aerial photographs EH's Knowlton Circles Project. As a result of that survey, the position and details of the barrows was established more accurately: SU 0185 1009. The largest of the barrows, described as 'A' above. Defined by a single ditch 32m in diameter. Within the area defined by the ring ditch are two short parallel linear ditches which may represent an internal feature or an earlier feature beneath the barrow. They have been recorded separately. The barrows described by authority 3 seem to be those described as 'A' and 'B' above. <5>

A ring ditch at Knowlton, Woodlands, is visible as a cropmark on 1989 and 2014 aerial photographs<6-7>.

The feature is one of a group of similar features at this location and is probably a Bronze Age barrow. It measures 35m across and has a single 1.2m wide exterior ditch. Within the ditch two short linear features (MDO3982) are visible as cropmarks on a 2014 aerial photograph <7>. Although these may be contemporary with the barrow they may alternatively be part of an earlier long barrow of Neolithic origin and have been recorded separately. The feature was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
