Summary

The site of plough levelled Bronze Age round barrow is visible as a cropmark ring ditch with traces of an internal mound on aerial photographs . It lies to the south of the southern henge of Knowlton Circles and is one of the extensive Knowlton Circles Barrow Group. The outer ring ditch is 26m across; it was digitally plotted during the Dorset Stour NMP.

Full Description

A group of three ring ditches just south of Knowlton Circles, in an area of bowl barrows. `B' - SU 02270935 & `C' - SU 02410939. Single ring ditches. <1>

The four round barrows described by authority <1> have been mapped from aerial photographs by EH's Knowlton Circles Project. Their locations and dimensions were fixed more accurately by that survey: B - SU 0221 0935; 26.8m in diameter.

These barrows are part of a much larger group of round barrows extending southwards from the Knowlton South henge. <2-4>

The site of plough levelled Bronze Age round barrow is visible as a cropmark double-concentric ring ditch on aerial photographs <5>. It lies to the south of the southern henge of Knowlton Circles and is one of the extensive Knowlton Circles Barrow Group. The outer ring ditch is 25m across and the inner 14m; it was digitally plotted during the Dorset Stour NMP.

‘Visible at this grid reference is a faint rise that stands out from the surrounding field as a concentration of chalk and flint. It has been severely reduced and spread by ploughing in a field regularly ploughed and newly ploughed and planted in grass when visited. Slightly oval in plan.#
