Summary

A Bronze Age round barrow approximately 25m in diameter is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs. It is defined by two circular ditches and is part of the extensive barrow cemetery known as the Knowlton Circles Barrow Group. It was mapped by English Heritage’s Knowlton Circles Project and was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

Full Description

SU 0288 1061. A Bronze Age round barrow is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs and has been mapped by EH's Knowlton Circles Project. It is defined by two circular ditches; the outer ditch is 22.3m in diameter, and the inner ditch is 14.9m in diameter. This barrow is part of the extensive barrow cemetery known as the Knowlton Circles Barrow Group (SU 01 SW 52). <1>

A double ring ditch is visible as a cropmark on 1950s aerial photographs. <2>

The ring ditch measures approximately 25m in diameter overall an comprises an external 0.5m wide ditch and an internal 0.4m wide ditch, 2.9m apart. A small circular depression 2.3m in diameter is visible at the centre of the feature. The feature is probably a barrow of Bronze Age in origin and part of the Knowlton Circles Barrow Group.

The feature is still visible as a cropmark in 2005 aerial photographs (2). It was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

‘A ploughed-out barrow site not recorded by RCHM or Grinsell, but visible on air photograph (AP/RCHM/1975/Dorset Vol V Plate 79). It consists of two concentric ring-ditches. The inner ditch 12.0m in diameter, the outer ditch 23.0m in diameter. These measurements estimated by comparison with ring-ditches recorded by RCHM. No visible trace in a field regularly ploughed and newly ploughed and planted in grass when visited.’
