Full Description
SU 0298 1054. A very small round barrow, visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs, has been mapped by EH's Knowlton Circles Project. It is defined by a single circular ditch 10.2m in diameter. The date of this barrow is uncertain. It lies within an extensive cemetery known as the Knowlton Circles Barrow Group (SU 01 SW 52) and may be Bronze Age in date. It is also associated with a possible Neolithic enclosure (SU 01 SW 193), whose south-eastern end appears to respect the barrow. Many similar small barrows, which may be Prehistoric or Roman, also appear in the immediate vicinity (SU 01 SW 190). <1, 2, 5, 6>
'Barrow, adjoins an enclosure (23) on the S.E.; diam. 30 ft'. <4>
A small round barrow at Knowlton is visible as a cropmark on 1950s aerial photographs <3>. The barrow is probably Bronze Age in origin and forms part of the Knowlton Circles Barrow Group.
The barrow measures approximately 12.5m in diameter with a single 0.7m wide external ditch. The barrow is situated adjacent and just southeast of a D-shaped enclosure (MDO6419).
The barrow is still visible as a cropmark on 2002 and 2005 aerial photographs <7, 8>.
It was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
