Summary

Part of the Roman road from Old Sarum to Badbury Rings, becoming known in post-Roman times as the Ackling (or Oakley) Dyke. In 1975 the RCHME reported a well-preserved road agger some 40-50 feet wide, and up to 6 feet high, with the remains of gravelled metalling, and often flanked by later tracks.

ST96650317 to SU14163265 Badbury Rings (Vindocladia) to Old Sarum (Sorviodunum) Roman Road. A well authenticated and largely extant Roman Road, including Ackling Dyke, between Gussage St Michael and Pentridge. (see linear archive for details)

'Roman Road IV. Old Sarum to Badbury Rings
The road from Old Sarum to Badbury Rings enters the county just N.E. of Woodyates…..The Roman road continues across Oakley down and cuts two disc barrows on the edge of a large group there. The well preserved agger, often flanked by later tracks, is now known as Ackling (Oakley) Dyke.'

The road has an agger 40 ft to 50 ft wide aqnd from 4ft to 6ft high with the remains of gravelled metalling.
