Summary

Bowl barrow forming part of the Oakley Down Group. In 1975 the RCHME reported that the monument was about 38 feet in diameter and survived 1.5 feet high, although it had been damaged and made irregular by ploughing. Previous investigation revealed a primary cremation in a cist.

Full Description

A bowl barrow, part of the barrow group on Oakley Down (SU 01 NW 19). It was described by RCHME as a mound circa 38 feet in diameter and 1.5 feet high, but damaged and "made irregular" by ploughing. It adjoins the ditch of the neighbouring larger barrow SU 01 NW 172. It was excavated in the early 19th century by Cunnington and Hoare (their barrow 5). According to Hoare, it "contained a simple interment of burned bones within a cist at the depth of two feet from the surface".
