Summary

A round barrow of a type known as a bowl barrow. In 1975 this monument was reported as being about nine metres in diameter and less than half a metre high. The monument has been much reduced by ploughing. Air photographs suggest that the ditch surrounding the mound is square rather than round, prompting suggestions that the monument may be of Iron Age date.

(87) Bowl (01491626), now almost levelled by ploughing; diam. 30 ft., ht. under 1 ft. <2>

Wimborne St Giles 87: possible Iron Age square barrow. <4-5>

Urn sherds, one with part of a Cordon, and minute flecks of burnt bone were found after ploughing the barrow at ST 0152 1631 (RCHM Mon 89). <3>

Air photographs suggest that the ditch surrounding the mound is square rather than round, prompting suggestions that the monument may be of Iron Age date. The barrow group itself comprises 5 barrows, 3 of them in a line. The other 4 were previously recorded here but have now been recorded separately. See also SU 01 NW 79.
