Summary

A small round barrow, identified from crop marks on oblique aerial photographs. The barrow is visible as a sub-oval cropmark on 1948 and 1990 aerial photographs. The barrow may be Bronze Age in origin and forms part of the Knowlton Circles Barrow Group. The feature was mapped by English Heritage’s Knowlton Circles Project and digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

Full Description

SU 0305 1068. A small rectilinear enclosure, possibly representing an Iron Age square barrow, is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs, and has been mapped by EH's Knowlton Circles Project. The enclosure is defined by a single ditch 12.4m x 11m. It is associated with an extensive barrow cemetery known as the Knowlton Circles Barrow Group (SU 01 SW 52), and was formerly recorded as barrow 42 within this cemetery. <1-2>

A barrow at Knowlton is visible as a sub-oval cropmark on a 1990 aerial photograph. <3>

The barrow may be Bronze Age in origin but is recorded in the NRHE as a possible enclosure or square Iron Age square barrow (Hob UID 1409867). The barrow forms part of the wider Knowlton Circles Barrow Group.

The barrow measures 13.5m by 12m and has single 1.4m wide external ditch.

The feature was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
