Monument record MDO6228 - Parley Barrow, a barrow on Poor Common, West Parley

A bowl barrow reported in 1975 as being around 104 feet in diameter with a mound about 10 feet high. The feature is visible on 1940s aerial photographs and current Lidar imagery and was digitally plotted from these by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

The feature comprises a slightly irregular elliptical mound 34.6m by 30.4m, with a 2.7m wide outer ditch, possibly slightly truncated on its southeast side by later post medieval extraction (MDO41374). The feature was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

`A' - Diameter ? 25 paces; height ? 8ft. Ditched.

`B' - Listed under bowl barrows. (9)

`A': A bowl barrow, diameter 27.0m., height 2.5m. With a surrounding ditch 3.0m. Wide and 0.3m. Deep. A small old gravel pit has encroached upon the extremity of the ditch on the south-south-east.

`B': A bowl barrow, diameter 10.0m., height 0.4m. With no visible ditch. Both barrows are heather covered, and situated in the gardens of a private house. (3)

Parley Barrow is stil so-called locally but is islanded within an area of new housing. The mound is as described in 1955,but the ditch has been encroached upon and destroyed.

The bowl barrow published at SZ 07929863 on the OS 25" 1959 has been destroyed and is in a levelled building plot.
