Summary

Seventeenth-century deer park with formal gardens, built before 1661 for Sir Walter Earle, 'landscaped' in the eighteenth century and enlarged mid-nineteenth century. At its most extensive the park encompassed some 320 hectares. The record for this monument has been enhanced with support from Wessex Water.

Full Description

C17 deer park with formal gardens, `landscaped' in C18, enlarged mid-C19, at most extensive c.320ha. Conservatory-early to mid-C19, 120m west-south-west of the house. Walled kitchen garden south of the stables, south west of house. Centre of park mainly open, with scattered mature trees, and larger clumps. Formal gardens established to west of house in C17. <2>

Formal gardens were laid out during the 1680s and comprised a parterre and geometrical lawns. These had been removed by the late 18th century . The formal terraced gardens were laid out circa 1810, possibly by John Nash. The park ws developed during the second half of the 18th century and extended in the early 19th century. <3>
