Full Description

A bowl barrow on Handley Common, levelled by ploughing but previously recorded as a mound circa 30 feet in diameter. Listed by RCHME as Sixpenny Handley 54 and by Grinsell as Handley 18a. It is one of a pair of barrows, the other being recorded as ST 91 NE 18. AP evidence reveals wider activity which may relate to quarrying within the vicinity, and Pitt-Rivers excavated a similar mound nearby and found it to be a probable spoil heap. The mounds do not survive as earthworks and are likely to represent quarry spoil heaps. Not recommended for scheduling. <3>
