Summary

A hoard of over six hundred Roman coins in a pot was found in 1877. The dates of the coins ranged from Mark Anthony to Septimius Severus, which suggests that the hoard was buried soon after AD 195. Four hundred and forty surviving coins are now in the Dorset County Museum.

'(v) The Handley Hoard. 440 Roman coins, the surviving part of a hoard of over 600 denarii found in 1877, at about nat. grid ref. ST(31)/992183, in an allotment garden by the turnpike road near Upwood Farm, Deanland, Handley, have been acquired by the Museum. The hoard, which ranges from Nero to Severus but includes some debased legionary denarii of Mark Antony, and was probably deposited soon after A.D. 194-5, is fully described by Miss Anne S. Robertson in Num. Chron., 6th ser., x (1950), pp. 311-5.'
