Full Description
To the east of New Road the place name “Blacklands” may have been given because this land has rich organic soil. This is a common name coincident with Roman sites. To the west of the road “wall furlong” suggests that walls have been found here and this is another common name associated with Roman sites.

Two place names on the 1773 map (DRO) indicate that the Romano-British settlement (112,481) continues south-west under Shapwick village. To the east of New Road the place name “Blacklands” may have been given because this land has rich organic soil. This is a common name coincident with Roman sites. To the west of the road “wall furlong” suggests that walls have been found here and this is another common name associated with Roman sites.
