Summary

A heavily ploughed Bronze Age bowl barrow. In 1975 the RCHME recorded this monument as approximately 65 feet in diameter, with a mound standing some 3 feet high. The record for this monument has been enhanced with support from Wessex Water.

Grinsell notes diameter 23 paces, height 3 feet. On arable; many pieces of sandstone on surface. <1>

A bowl barrow is visible as a low rise 18m dia. and 0.5m high. It lies on the crest of a south facing spur of chalk. Two fragments of Romano British pottery were found on the mound when it was visited. One of decorated Samian the other of a black burnished ware. The mound is chalkier than the surrounding field. This site is called “Straw Barrow” from the early 19th earlier maps and surveys refer to the “Bradford Barrow” 112,245 as “Straw Barrow” (e.g. Woodward 1773)
