Summary

The site of a plough-levelled round barrow is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs on King Down, Pamphill. It is visible as a cropmark ring ditch 15m across with traces of an inner mound. It was digitally plotted during the Dorset Stour NMP.

Full Description

King Down Group of four barrows on the crest of a ridge, about 160 ft. above O.D. All have been damaged by ploughing, and (c) and (d) have been largely flattened. From one of these came two barrel urns, one of 'South Lodge' type. … (C) Bowl (98060345); diam. 45 ft., ht. under 1 ft. <1>

Air photographs taken April 15th 2002 show A and B extant as earthwork mounds and removed from cultivation. C and D are visible as ring ditches. Equidistant from the last two, and almost in between them, is another very small ring ditch. <3>

‘King Down Group consists of four barrows on the crest of a ridge, about 160 ft. above O.D. All have been damaged by ploughing, and (88) and (89) have been largely flattened. From one of these came two barrel urns, one of ‘South Lodge’ type (Arch., XLIII (1871), 356-7; Arch. J., CXIX (1962), 54-5). (88) Bowl (98060345); diam. 45 ft., ht. under 1 ft.’
