Full Description

A Bronze Age bowl barrow, one of a small group of 4 barrows (A, B, C & D) scattered around the west side of the Crichel valley to the west of Veiny Cheese Pond. This barrow (A) has been levelled by ploughing. It is one of two barrows (see also ST 91 SE 190) which appear to influence the alignment of the later linear earthwork ST 91 SW 40. The Royal Commission on Historic Monuments in England recorded its former extent as circa 70 feet in diameter and 2.5 feet high. Grinsell noted the presence of a surrounding ditch. There is no record of any excavation of this barrow, in contrast to the other component barrows in the group.

NB the three other barrows formerly described here have now been recorded separately.

(Centred ST 960115) Tumuli (NR) Tumulus (NR) Tumulus (site of) (NAT). <4>

Round barrows are scattered on the W. side of the Crichel valley, W. of Veiny Cheese Pond; they lie at about 200 ft. above O.D., mostly on a gentle S.E. slope. All have been damaged or levelled by ploughing and three of them (B-D) have been completely removed by excavation. (Two barrows (A) and (B) lie close to a linear dyke (ST 91 SW 40) 106) and appear to have determined its alignment at the E. end.

(A) Bowl (95961135), now flattened by ploughing; former diam. 70 ft., ht. 2 1/2 ft. <5>
