Summary

Earthworks in the form of banks, scarps, rectangular platforms and mounds, the remains of brick kilns. These are likely to have produced bricks for the construction of Horton Tower, a folly built in the middle of the 18th century.

Full Description

Traces of the brick kiln area described <1> can be seen as cropmarks on aerial photographs to the north of Horton Tower, at SU 03099 06815. The cropmarks consist of two mounds with scarps and possible trackways around them. These features were recorded from EH Reconnaissance aerial photographs of 2011 <2>.

'(7) HORTON TOWER … Banks, scarps, rectangular platforms and mounds (03180705), some 200 yds. N. of the tower, are the remains of brick kilns. The mounds were destroyed in 1958.'
