Full Description

Banks, scarps, rectangular platforms and mounds at SU 03180705, north of Horton Tower, are the remains of brick kilns. The mounds were destroyed in 1958. ("Brickplace Copse" is shown on OS 6" 1963 at SU 031070) <1>

Horton Kiln 2: Post Medieval pottery kiln and brickworks. The pottery kiln was in production by 1652, operated by Elias Talbot, and continued until 1711. The clay was obtained locally, probably from Haythorne Common. The Court Rolls of Horton Manor records clay extraction from the common during the second quarter of the 17th century. <3>

Traces of the brick kiln area described above can be seen as cropmarks on aerial photographs to the north of Horton Tower, at SU 03099 06815. The cropmarks consist of two mounds with scarps and possible trackways around them. These features were recorded from EH Reconnaissance aerial photographs of 2011 <5>.
