Summary

A Bronze Age bowl barrow situated in heathland near the crest of a hill. In 1975 this monument was reported as being around 52 feet in diameter with a mound about four feet high, and an encircling ditch. The centre of the mound has been dug into, probably in the course of antiquarian investigation. This barrow may be a barrow investigated in 1845 by J H Austen, who recorded no finds. The barrow is visible on current Lidar imagery and was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

Published surveys (25" 1900) revised. <1>

There are six barrows in the parish; one of them, either (7), (8) or (9), was excavated by J.H. Austen in 1845 with no resulting finds (C.T.D. Pt 2 No.32). … (8) Bowl (04360104), on the ridge top 350 yds. E. of (7): diameter 52 ft., height 4 ft., with slight traces of a ditch. The centre of the mound has been dug into. <2>

'B'. SU 04360104. Bowl barrow, crossed by a track. Diameter 16.5 metres, height 1.2 metres. No visible traces of a ditch. Resurveyed at 1:2500 on M.S.D. <4>

The barrow is visible on current Lidar imagery <5> as a sub-circular mound around 14.25m across and surrounded by a shallow or flattened berm, possibly a ditch, between 2.5m and 6.3m wide. Aerial photographs <6> indicate a path passing over or round its north side.

The feature was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
