‘NEOLITHIC AND ROMAN FINDS FROM GUSSAGE COWDOWN, GUSSAGE ST. MICHAEL … The Roman pottery, which had been discovered as the result of ploughing, came from two sites. The eastern site (ST 992142), which is close to a so-called ‘banjo’ enclosure [Footnote: ‘Banjo’ enclosures are defined and briefly discussed by B. Perry in Rural Settlement in Roman Britain, C.B.A. Research Report 7 (1966), pp.39-41] forming part of the settlement, yielded some samian ware and pottery of ‘Durotrigian’ derived types, including fragments of bead-rim bowls. Amongst the samian ware was a base of a Form 33 cup with the maker’s stamp. MAXMINI. Maximinus was a Central Gaulish pottery of Lezoux who was working c. A.D. 155-180. This is only the second time this mark has been recorded in Britain ‘Footnote: I must thank Mr. Brian Hartley for information about this potter].’
