Find Spot record MDO5649 - Roman pottery from Gussage Cow Down, Gussage St Michael

Pieces of Roman pottery found near a banjo enclosure included samian ware and pottery described as 'Durotrigian derived types'. One of the pieces of samian ware had a the stamp of the maker Maximinus from Central Gaul and known to be active AD 155-180.

‘NEOLITHIC AND ROMAN FINDS FROM GUSSAGE COWDOWN, GUSSAGE ST. MICHAEL … The Roman pottery, which had been discovered as the result of ploughing, came from two sites. The eastern site (ST 992142), which is close to a so-called ‘banjo’ enclosure [Footnote: ‘Banjo’ enclosures are defined and briefly discussed by B. Perry in Rural Settlement in Roman Britain, C.B.A. Research Report 7 (1966), pp.39-41] forming part of the settlement, yielded some samian ware and pottery of ‘Durotrigian’ derived types, including fragments of bead-rim bowls. Amongst the samian ware was a base of a Form 33 cup with the maker’s stamp. MAXMINI. Maximinus was a Central Gaulish pottery of Lezoux who was working c. A.D. 155-180.
