Full Description

A bowl barrow on Gussage Hill, located among the earthworks of the later prehistoric settlement (ST 91 SE 3), and part of a small group of barrows located just south of the Dorset Cursus (Linear 41). RCHME fieldwork recorded the barrow (A) as a mound 60 feet in diameter and 6 feet high, surrounded by a ditch 15 feet across and 1 foot deep.

NB the other barrows previously described here have now been recorded separately as ST 91 SE 160 and ST 91 SE 161.

(A) ST 99481372. A bowl barrow damaged by ploughing. It is 60ft in diameter and 6ft high with a ditch 15ft across and 1 foot deep. <3>

'There is evidence of twenty round barrows in the parish, most of them levelled or badly damaged by ploughing. They are found on the two Chalk ridges which cross the parish, Week Street Down in the extreme W. and Gussage Hill in the centre.

Gussage Hill Group comprises four round barrows (29-32) and two long barrows (14) and (15). They lie on the summit of the hill, over 350 ft. above O.D., among the earthworks of Monument (7).
