Full Description

A round barrow on Gussage Hill. RCHME fieldwork recorded the mound as circa 30 feet in diameter and less than 1 foot high. Colt Hoare depicts two round barrows immediately adjacent to one another on his plan of the Gussage Down earthworks. There is no surviving evidence for a second mound (although that does not mean that one didn't exist) and it may mean that he has merely depicted this barrow and ST 91 SE 159 rather closer together than they are in reality.

NB this barrow was previously recorded as part of ST 91 SE 6.

'There is evidence of twenty round barrows in the parish, most of them levelled or badly damaged by ploughing. They are found on the two Chalk ridges which cross the parish, Week Street Down in the extreme W. and Gussage Hill in the centre.

Three barrows, all heavily ploughed, lie on a spur at the N.W. end of Gussage Hill, between 325 ft. and 350 ft. above O.D.
