Summary

A series of medieval strip lynchets situated obliquely across east-facing pasture slopes. The lynchets are from 100 to 230 metres in length and from 0.7 to 1.5 metres in height. Below and to the north are two furlongs of ridge and furrow.

Full Description

Immediately north-west of Knapp Hill Farm, at ST 686057, is a series of strip lynchets running obliquely to the contours, 170 yds long with low risers and treads 40 yds wide. Below and to the north are two furlongs of ridge-and-furrow 6 yds to 7 yds wide. (1)

Three Medieval strip lynchets (with traces of a fourth?) lie obliquely across east-facing pasture slopes. The lynchets are from 100.0 to 230.0m in length and from 0.7 to 1.5m in height. The terraces are from 7.0 to 10.0m in width. The lynchets have at some period been reduced and spread a little by ploughing. <2>

'Nothing is known of the date of inclosure of the open fields of Duntish but there are remains in three places. Immediately N.W. of Knapp Hill Farm (686057) is a series of strip lynchets running obliquely to the contours, 170 yds. long with low risers and treads 40 yds. wide. Below and to the N. are two furlongs of ridge-and-furrow 6 yds. to 7 yds. wide'.
