Full Description

The late 14th century churchyard cross base situated near a yew tree to the west of St Hubert's Church, Corfe Mullen comprises two massive square steps surmounted by an octagonal and square socket stones with a mortice at the top for the insertion of a shaft. The shaft and cross were probably removed in 1643 under the Ordinance of Parliament. <1>

A printed notice in the church states that the original shaft of the cross was broken off at the base in 1643 but a new shaft was given by a parishioner in 1915. After the erection of this new shaft, the old cross was found in the churchyard when the roots of a tree were being cleared; this cross is now inserted in the west wall of the church, over the belfry door.

The base of the churchyard cross (as described in <2>) with the addition of the modern shaft. The remains now incorporated in the west wall of the church at SY 97659834 are merely a fragment of a Latin cross, which perhaps surmounted the original shaft. <3>

Churchyard cross base, 14th century, with modern shafted cross, situated north west of the church. A plain medieval gable-crosshead is also in the tower. <5>

No change. <6>
