Full Description

The Pre-Medieval earthworks to the East of Candy's Farm may be a Roman signal station. (2)

(SY993987. Earthworks sited to the field East of Candy's Farm from OS 10000 1982 and auth 1) (3)

Earthworks originally visible on a vertical aerial photograph (RAF CPE/UK/1934 3144) taken in 1947 were noted by Mark Simons in October 1984, who suggested they may represent a series of house platforms running E-W and possibly the site of a deserted medieval settlement. (1)

Re-examination of the photograph and more recent vertical air photos suggests that these rectilinear ditched features may represent small paddocks rather than house platforms, perhaps associated with the adjacent former East End Farm. [P Bellamy, September 2013.]

The earthworks in this field have also been provisionally identified as a Roman signal station.
