Full Description

SY 9929 9656. A bowl barrow at Corfe Hills. 6 paces in diameter and 1½ ft high. Grinsell states "On 1 in OS 1811" (but not found on any OS maps or plans). <1>

In 1964 a small excavation was carried out on a supposed barrow, on Corfe Hills, Corfe Mullen, due for destruction during building operations. The complete absence of finds in the mound, some 18 ft across and 1 ft high, supports a natural explanation for it, but signs of burning including short vertical lengths of charcoal in the white sand beside the mound could argue against it. "The extent and relationship of the charcoal to the 'heap' was not, however, determinable in what was necessarily an hasty and inadequate excavation." <2>

There is now no trace of this mound, the site of which is occupied by modern housing. <3>
