Alderholt Kiln 3: A post Medieval pottery kiln, part of the Verwood Potteries. The pottery kiln was operated by James Vincent who constructed both the kiln and associated cottage in c. 1770. The pottery works was in operation until 1810. <6> Limited excavations carried out in 1975, revealed a kiln 3.5 m in diameter, with a rectangular furnace chamber. The kiln was dated to c. 1750. <2>

Site of a former pottery kiln known from documentary sources and excavation. A kiln and cottage where erected on this site by James Vincent in about 1770, apparently without permission. The pottery was run by him until his death in 1810. The kiln mound still exists and the limited excavations carried out by the Salisbury Museum Archaeological Research Group in 1975 revealed the greater part of the kiln floor and flue. The kiln belonged to the second half of the eighteenth century, but the large quantities of pottery waster sherds redeposited within the insulating mound were of an earlier date. There are no contemporary buildings surviving on the site.
