Full Description

(SU 10041257 NGR sited from Authority <1> and OS 1: 10000 1972). Alderholt kiln 6: A pottery kiln which started production in 1736, operated by William Hellior. It was in use until after 1772. None of the kiln structures or associated buildings survive. A pottery scatter marks the site of the kiln. <1>

Site of a former pottery kiln known from documentary sources and a scatter of pottery in gardens. The pottery was probably started by William Hellior in 1736. In 1772 the reversion of the premises fell to his son William and from this date the business appears to have been sub-let to Henry West, son of Henry West of Crendell. Potting continued at the site until about 1799, when he returned to work his father’s kiln at Crendell (3 001 025). <1> <2>
