Summary

A pottery kiln, known from documentary evidence and a scatter of pottery wasters. Part of the Verwood Potteries, this kiln was in production by the 1620s operated by John and Thomas Attwater. The kiln was owned by John Major in 1700 and finally closed during the late 18th century.

Full Description

The site of a former pottery in Alderholt in use from the early seventeenth to the second half of the eighteenth century. The site is known from documentary sources and from a heavy concentration of waster sherds. No remains of the kiln are visible.

The tenement was constructed by John Attwater in 1602 and his son, Thomas, was potting there in the 1620s. The site was owned by John Major in 1700. The later history is not known, but the kiln was finally closed during the second half of the eighteenth century. Waster sherds are present on the site, but no structural features survive. <1> <2>
