Full Description
At Presseys Corner, SU 12301313, are the remains of a kiln. <1>
Alderholt Kiln 8: A pottery kiln, part of the Verwood Potteries. The kiln was operated by the Hennings during the 17th and early 18th century. The Hennings were succeeded by a number of potters including Nicholas Francis during the 1730s, John Shearing 1804-1815, Richard Foster and son 1815-1841. Sporadic production continued into the late 19th century. Only the kiln mound now survives. <4>
Old kiln mound at Salisbury Arms Farm, Alderholt. The mound is tree-covered and no brickwork is visible. Some robbing of the of the mound material has taken place. No contemporary buildings are visible. This kiln was working from at least the seventeenth century through until the late nineteenth century. John and Samuel Henning were working at this pottery in the seventeenth and early eighteenth century, followed by, amongst others, Nicholas Francis in the 1730s and John Shearing in 1804. In 1815 John was replaced by Richard Foster who in turn was succeeded by his son Richard, the latter dying in 1841. Sporadic production continued by a number of potters for several more decades. <3-7>
