Monument record MDO5305 - Iron Age enclosure, Winterborne Stickland

A roughly circular enclosure visible on aerial photographs, interpreted as a probable Iron Age settlement. The enclosed area is around 8 acres, and the monument is cut by the parish boundary.

A probable settlement consisting of a complex but roughly circular enclosed area of about 8 acres, suggestively Iron Age in form, is visible on air photographs at ST 850045. The feature is cut by the parish boundary between Winterborne Clenston and Winterborne Stickland. <1>

ST 850045. Soil marks of the probable settlement, mentioned by authority 1, are visible on J Boyden air photographs taken in 1973. Indistinct soil marks of settlement also appear on RAF air photographs. <2>

A probable settlement (a), a complex but roughly circular enclosed area of about 8 acres, suggestively Iron Age in form, is visible on air photographs ½ mile N.W. at 8500045; it is cut by the parish boundary between Winterborne Clenston and Winterborne Stickland (Cambridge University Collections: obliquest, AMN 100-2). The fields appear to be contemporary with cross-dykes and linear ditches.'
