Summary

A mound on Houghton South Down interpreted as a probable round barrow. In 1970 this monument was reported as being around 21 feet in diameter with a mound about one foot high.

Full Description

ST 80640372. Probable barrow. Listed under bowl barrows. <1>

No trace of barrow at ST 80640372. 'A'-ST 80600371. Probable bowl barrow, 9.0m diameter and 0.4m. high with no visible ditch. 'B'-ST 80590370; 'C'-ST 80610370. Two ditchless mounds each 5.5m. diameter and 0.2m. high. Possibly very small bowl barrows but this classification would need confirmatory excavation. <2>

Three mounds on Houghton South Down listed under bowl barrows. ST 80640372. Probable barrows, 10 paces diameter and 1ft high. No 8 Approx. ST 80620371. Mound, 7 paces diameter and 9ins high. Found by L. V. Grinsel 1954 No 8a. Approx. ST 80650371. Mound, 6 paces diameter and 6ins high. Found by L. V. Grinsell, 1954, No 8b. <3>

Centred ST 806037. Three small mounds lie on the crest of a north-east facing slope in an area of rough ground; nearby are other less regular mounds. The mutilated remains of 'Celtic' fields with a possible settlement (see ST 80 SW 73 & 76) occur a short distance to the south east. To the north, where the chalk has a gravel cap, gravel diggings are found.
