Summary

A scarp 12 feet high and 260 yards long with two right-angle bends, lies about 500 yards east of Higher Houghton Farm. A map of 1776 shows this as part of the open field system of the parish, at that time only partly enclosed.

Full Description

(ST 812047) A scarp 12ft high and 260 yds long, with two right-angle bends, lies about 500yds E of Higher Houghton Farm, at ST 811047. In 1776 it was the riser of one or two strips within an enclosed field. (Several lengths of bank shown in this area on OS 6" 1969). <1>

'(8) Cultivation Remains. In 1776 four open fields still remained partly unenclosed (Map of Winterborne Houghton, D.C.R.O.); they were named North Field, Little Field, Croft Field and Whiteway Field. Elsewhere, other isolated strips remained within enclosed fields ... About 500 yds. E. of Higher Houghton Farm (811047) is a scarp 12 ft. high and 260 yds. long, with two right-angle bends; in 1776 it was the riser of one of two strips within an enclosed field.'
