Summary

Bronze Age bowl barrow. In 1972 the RCHME reported that the monument was being denuded by cultivation but had formerly been recorded as 60 feet in diameter, with a mound some 5 feet high. There were distinct traces of a ditch and a pit in the centre of the mound. The site of the round barrow is visible as cropmarks and earthworks on aerial photographs and lidar imagery and was digitally recorded during the Dorset Middle Stour AI&M Project. The record for this monument has been enhanced with support from Wessex Water.

Full Description

Bowl barrow, over 200 ft. above O.D., ocupies an eastward-facing spur on the edge of Tarrant Rushton Airfield. Now being reduced by cultivation, it was formerly 60 ft. in diameter and 5 ft. high, with distinct traces of a ditch and of a pit dug in the centre. <1-2>

On the barrow floor a skeleton with a rude British urn at its head was found. Probably from this site. Blake 1870 No 12. <4>

The site of a Bronze Age round barrow is visible as cropmarks and earthworks on aerial photographs and lidar imagery <5-6> and was digitally recorded during the Dorset Middle Stour AI&M Project. The barrow mound is 17m across and encircled by a ring ditch.
