Monument record MDO514 - Shrunken settlement at Manor Farm, Broadmayne

Please read our .

Summary

Slight earthworks forming a series of small enclosures defined by earthen banks and ditches were observed in 1995 during archaeological work in connection with a proposed extension to the graveyard. These earthworks were interpreted as medieval settlement remains; probably the remains of closes behind houses which are thought likely to have been situated closer to the road.

Full Description

<1> RCHM Mss file (Unpublished document). SWX2467.

‘(Area centred SY 729867) In the field immediately north east of Broadmayne church are indications of earthworks:- An irregular mound 12 by 16 yds and 2ft high is visible 38 yds north of the school wall, and 32 yds to the west are indications of a rectangular platform 14 yds wide merging into the natural slope. Twenty yards north-north-east of this feature is a depression 10 yds diameter and 3ft deep with a slight outer bank to the north. The bank measures 5 yds wide and 3ft high along the north east and north west boundaries of the field. These earthworks cannot be positively classified but the close promixity of Manor Farm (SY 728866) could suggest a manorial origin.’
