Summary

The remains of a bowl barrow in Pond Bottom Plantation with a diameter of 50 feet and a height of 7½ feet. A surrounding ditch was noted but was too indistinct for meaningful measurement. Situated close to another barrow, just 12 metres apart. The record for this monument has been enhanced with support from Wessex Water. The barrow is visible as an earthwork on 1940s aerial photographs and was digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project.

(ST 92090766, ST 92100762) Tumuli (NR). <2>

'B' ST 92100763. A bowl barrow, 50 ft in diameter and 7 1/2 ft high, with surrounding ditch too ill-defined for measurement. <1>

ST 92090766; ST 92090762. The remains of two bowl barrows in Pond Bottom Plantation. The barrows are 12 metres apart and survive as mounds measuring 15 and 16 metres in diameter and up to 2.3 metres high. Scheduling amended. <3>

Note: 2 barrows were originally recorded under a single NRHE UID 209376 but were subsequently separated into 2 separate records on the Dorset HER – being MDO5108 & MDO5109.

The barrow is visible as an earthwork on 1940s aerial photographs as a 16m in diameter mound. The centre of the mound may have had some antiquarian excavation. <5>

The feature was digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project.
