Full Description
A grass covered bell barrow. The mound is 29.0m. diameter and 3.0m. high, with a flat berm 6.0m. wide and an outer ditch 5.0m. wide and 0.7m. average depth. The berm and ditch are overgrown. The mound is considerably mutilated with a large central hollow and a trench on the eastern side. There is a further excavation on the west side and some quarrying has taken place in the south east quadrant. <1>
SY 70708542. Bowl barrow; diameter about 82 ft., height 10ft. <4>
SY 70698542. A probable bell barrow. The mound has been reduced by ploughing on its north-west side; it is now oval in plan 27.0m. north-east/south-west by 21.0m. transversely, and is severely mutilated by quarry pits. A fragment of ditch about 20.0m. in length with associated berm survives under dense vegetation on the south-west side, dimensions as noted by Authority 1. <5>
Re-surveyed at 1:2500 on M.S.D. SY 7067985429. A polished black pebble, 'palm-sized', was found during investigation on the present land surface of the former north quadrant of the barrow; See 25" AM. (Geological origin Devon); probably utilised as a 'fabricator'.) (a). Deposited in Dorchester Museum. <6>
A Bronze Age round barrow, an outlier of the Culliford Tree barrow group (see SY 78 NW 9 and associated monuments). Described by Grinsell and RCHME as a bowl barrow, the Ordnance Survey considered it a probable bell barrow. Ploughing has reduced it to an oval shape measuring 29 metres by 21 metres, and is up to 3 metres high. Ordnance Survey field investigation in 1954 recorded a flat berm 6 metres wide and an outer ditch 5 metres wide and up to 0.7 metres deep. By 1979, only fragments of ditch and berm were visible. The mound has also suffered from quarry damage, and also features a large central hollow and a trench on the eastern side, suggesting an episode of excavation. Listed by Grinsell as Broadmayne 8 and by RCHME as Broadmayne 29. <1> <2> <4-6>
A Bronze Age bowl barrow, part of a dispersed linear group of barrows ranged along part of the Dorset Ridgeway and incorporating the Broadmayne bank barrow. <9>
