Monument record MDO50647 - Possible medieval hollow way, Steepleton House, Iwerne Stepleton

Please read our .

Summary

Ditched and banked linear features are visible as earthworks within the grounds of Stepleton House on Environment Agency lidar imagery. The features form a deep north-south running trackway or hollow way with banked sides, possibly formed of medieval strip lynchets. The hollow way might also be of medieval date, although at its northern end the feature potentially cuts an area of medieval ridge and furrow, suggesting it might be a later feature. The trackway or hollow way might have once linked with the former medieval drove road of Smugglers Lane (MDO4120) at this location. The features were digitally plotted as part of the Mid Dorset Downs AIM project.
