Full Description
A field system on the east side of Woolland is visible as banked and ditched earthworks on 1940s aerial photographs and Environment Agency lidar imagery (RAF 1945; RAF 1947; EA 2018). The features probably represent multi-phase activity within the medieval to post medieval period and are difficult to confidently distinguish between from the available aerial sources. Some of the field boundaries contain ditches that might double as drainage ditches. Earlier linear banks might represent part of a medieval system, possibly incorporating some fragments of strip field. Traces of possible cultivation marks are visible on a 1940s aerial photographs, including an area which potentially overlies medieval settlement remains (MDO5377), suggesting a later medieval to post medieval date. The features were digitally recorded during the Mid Dorset Downs AIM project.
