Monument record MDO50540 - Undated enclosure, Ivers Wood, Woolland

Please read our .

Summary

Curvilinear banked and ditched earthworks on the southern edge of Ivers Wood, Woolland are visible on 1940s aerial photographs and current Environment Agency lidar imagery. The principal features are shown as earthworks on the OS Epoch 1 25 inch map but their nature and origin are uncertain. They could well be later prehistoric in date, perhaps part of an enclosure of some form, but a later date cannot be ruled out without further investigation. The site appears disturbed by possible post medieval chalk extraction (MDO50541). The features were digitally recorded during the Mid Dorset Downs AIM project.

Full Description

Curvilinear banked and ditched earthworks on the southern edge of Ivers Wood, Woolland are visible on 1940s aerial photographs and current Environment Agency lidar imagery (RAF 1945; RAF 1947; EA 2018). The earthworks appear to form the south and west sides of a partial banked and ditched enclosure, with a smaller sub-rectilinear banked enclosure set into the southeast corner of this. On the east side is a multiple banked and ditched feature that could possibly form part of a boundary feature, trackway, or even possibly a small section of later prehistoric cross dyke. The principal features are shown as earthworks on the OS Epoch 1 25 inch map (OS c1880) but their date and function are not certain. They could well be later prehistoric in date, perhaps part of an enclosure of some form, but a later, perhaps medieval to post medieval date cannot be ruled out without further investigation. The site appears to be disturbed by possible post medieval chalk extraction, including a ditched pit-like feature within the enclosure that might be contemporary with it or alternatively a post medieval chalk pit (MDO50541). The features were digitally recorded during the Mid Dorset Downs AIM project.
