Summary

Fragments of a banked field system are visible as low earthworks on lidar imagery under trees within Whatcombe Wood. The boundaries appear to be overlain by medieval ridge and furrow cultivation (described in MDO50370) and are therefore considered likely to be of Iron Age or Roman origin; they cover an area of over 36 ha and were digitally recorded during the Mid Dorset Downs AIM project. The system continues to the north into New Coppice described in MDO50368, and to the south into Whatcombe Common described in MDO50371.

Full Description

Fragments of a banked field system are visible as low earthworks on lidar imagery under trees within Whatcombe Wood. The boundaries appear to be overlain by medieval ridge and furrow cultivation (described in MDO50370) and are therefore considered likely to be of Iron Age or Roman origin; they cover an area of over 36 ha and were digitally recorded during the Mid Dorset Downs AIM project. The system continues to the north into New Coppice described in MDO50368, and to the south into Whatcombe Common described in MDO50371.
