Monument record MDO5028 - Bowl barrow, Tarrant Rawston

One of three closely spaced Bronze Age bowl barrow on Keyneston Down, Tarrant Rawston, north of Ashley Wood. In 1972 the RCHME reported that this monument has a diameter of 30 feet, with a mound standing some 3 feet high. The record for this monument has been enhanced with support from Wessex Water. The barrow is visible as a cropmark on an aerial photograph dated 1982 and as an earthwork on current lidar imagery. The feature was digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM Project.

'A' ST 92640551. A bowl barrow 17.0m in diameter and 1.8m high, with unsurveyable traces of a surrounding ditch. Grass covered and flat on top, it appears to have been excavated. <1>

These barrows 'A' and 'B' and mound 'C' are now described as having been destroyed by ploughing. <5>

The barrow is visible as a cropmark on an aerial photograph dated 1982 and as an earthwork on current lidar imagery <6-7>. The feature is just over 10m in diameter, to include a possible ditch approximately 0.65m wide <3>. The feature was digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM Project.
