Full Description
An area of post medieval extraction is visible as irregular ditched earthworks and disturbed ground on Ibberton Long Down on 1940s aerial photographs and Environment Agency lidar imagery (RAF 1947; EA 2018). A gravel pit is recorded on the OS Epoch 1 25 inch map (OS c1880) but the area of potential extraction extends well beyond the late 19th century pit and includes ditched hollows within the disturbed area. It might be a wider area of gravel extraction but could potentially include some post medieval chalk pits. Banked linear features within the area could be part of a later prehistoric field system rather than extractive features and were recorded separately (MDO50279). The features were digitally plotted during the Mid Dorset Downs AIM project.
