Summary

Shortly after the formation of the United Kingdon Atomic Energy Authority in 1954, a site at Winfrith Heath was chosen for the construction and operation of a number of experimental and research reactors and supporting facilities. Construction began in September 1957 and the first reactor became operational in 1959, though the official opening of the site was on 16 September 1960.
