Full Description
A circular ditched enclosure on Hambledon Hill is visible as an earthwork on a 1954 aerial photograph (RAF 1954). The enclosure has a central circular banked feature within it and is located on the east side of a wide trackway. The feature is of uncertain origin but is located a short distance north of a recorded Second World War auxiliary unit operation base (MDO44436), the precise site of which is not known. It could possibly be a miltary features associated with this base. The section of trackway adjacent to the feature does not feature on pre-war OS mapping and obviously went out of use during the course of the 20th century; it is recorded as a footpath on the OS Epoch 2a 10,000 map of 1962 but not on later mapping. IT could have had a short lived military use. It and the circular enclosure are no longer visible on recent Google Earth imagery or lidar imagery.
The feature was digitally plotted during the Mid Dorset Downs AIM project.
