Full Description
A line of broken and deteriorated banked linear earthworks are visible either side of a bend in the River Stour on the border of Child Okeford and Shillingstone parishes on 1940s aerial photographs and Environment Agency lidar imagery (RAF 1947; EA 2018). The features on both sides of the river terminate at a sluice featured on the OS Epoch 1 25 inch map of c1880 and also visible as a structure in 1947 (OS c1880; RAF 1947). On the south side two of the banked features extend along a tributary of the river as far as the former Bere Marsh corn mill (MDO26056). The earthworks are also shown on the OS Epoch 1 map and might be levees or flood defences of possibly post medieval origin, although a medieval date is also feasible. They were digitally plotted during the Mid Dorset Downs AIM project.
