Monument record MDO49722 - Post medieval clay pit, brickworks, Child Okeford

Two post medieval clay pits are visible as shallow earthworks on the north side of Child Okeford on 1940s aerial photographs and Environment Agency lidar imagery. The features are recorded on the OS Epoch 1 25 inch map of c1880 where they form part of a post medieval brickworks. They were digitally plotted during the Mid Dorset Downs AIM project.

Two post medieval clay pits are visible as shallow earthworks on the north side of Child Okeford on 1940s aerial photographs and Environment Agency lidar imagery (Raf 1947; EA 2018). The features are recorded on the OS Epoch 1 25 inch map of c1880 where they form part of a post medieval brickworks (OS c1880). To the west of the largest pit, the westernmost of the two, a further depression visible on both a 1947 aerial photograph and lidar imagery might be associated with an extended area of 19th/20th century clay extraction, or alternatively the extent of the brickworks yard itself. A lime kiln recorded on the OS c1880 map is no longer extant on the 1947 aerial photograph. The features were digitally plotted during the Mid Dorset Downs AIM project.
