Summary

Earthworks of former medieval settlement are visible on aerial photographs {1-2}. They lie north east of the present village, adjoining the former settlement of Fryer Mayne. Remains comprise of banks, ditches and house platforms. A hollow way is contiguous with a similar feature to the north east indicating close association with Fryer Mayne.

Full Description

Earthworks centred at SY 73308650, covering an area of 1.0 ha approximately, are indicative of former settlement. They consist of banks and ditches, house platforms and minor scarps and banks. A hollow-way at SY 73338647 is contiguous with a hollow-way to the north-east and it is evident that this site, preserved in pasture, is a south-west extension of the Fryer Mayne settlement, (SY 78 NW 46) now under cultivation. Surveyed at 1:2500 on MSD.

Field boundary banks and a building platform, centred at SY 73158657 and covering an area of about 0.4 ha, are indicative of shrinkage within the existing village of Broadmayne. Surveyed at 1:2500 on Permatrace. <2>
